SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — November 5, 2026. A public-health investigation remains an important concern for Central Coast families following a suspected exposure to Shiga toxin-producing E. coli at Brookshire Farms. In the county’s October 30 official update, health authorities described five laboratory-confirmed cases and eight additional symptomatic cases under investigation among people who visited between October 16 and October 26. The eight possible cases should not be called laboratory-confirmed.
Why health officials are concerned
Three patients developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious complication that can affect blood cells and the kidneys. Another patient was hospitalized and released, the county reported. Children under ten are at increased risk of severe complications. Officials have not identified a definitive exposure source and say the farm is cooperating with the investigation; it remains closed as a precaution.
What visitors should know
Symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, vomiting and occasionally fever. They may appear several days after exposure. People who visited during the suspected window and develop symptoms should contact a healthcare professional and mention the visit. Severe symptoms, bloody diarrhea or signs of dehydration require prompt medical care. People without symptoms do not need to assume they are infected.
How infection can spread
STEC bacteria may be swallowed through contaminated food or water or transferred from animals, surfaces or hands. Proper soap-and-water handwashing is important after animal contact and before eating. No specific food, animal or farm activity has been established as the outbreak source.
