SAN LUIS OBISPO — October 26, 2026. Drivers heading toward Cal Poly late Monday should prepare for a temporary change at the intersection of Highway 1 (Cabrillo Highway) and Highland Drive. Caltrans says traffic signals there will be switched to emergency flash mode overnight while PG&E relocates a utility pole.

The operation is scheduled from 9 p.m. Monday, October 26, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, October 27. Caltrans expects only minor delays, but a flashing signal calls for additional care at an intersection routinely used by students, staff, cyclists and local residents. Drivers must follow the actual signal indications and workers’ directions on site.

Part of a larger intersection improvement

The utility work is a preliminary step ahead of the Highland Improvement Project, which Caltrans said was expected to begin construction in late December if weather permits. Monday’s pole relocation is not the start of that entire road-improvement project, and traffic arrangements may change as later phases are announced.

Check Caltrans QuickMap for updates before crossing the area late at night. Primary source: Caltrans District 5 notice. This report appears in San Luis Obispo News.
